Working Hard

The guys have been hard at it.  We had to make a decision about the woodwork, and the condition of much of it. There are a few areas that look, well, um interesting, in a vintage way.  Then there is the plain old bad.  Separated panels, lots of nail and screw holes, animal claw marks. We tried a variety of varnishes and came to the conclusion that much of it was not salvageable.  I think the previous owner had tried to strip or sand them in the past, maybe to 'freshen them up'.  So, white paint it will be, on almost all the interior space.  I'm saving the two best doors (the entry doors) in their present state.

The sub-floor is down in the kitchen, the all-new-all-better bedroom is getting some much needed plaster work done.  The bathroom has been completely stripped of everything, and man it smells nasty in there.  Some new sub floor is going in there today, as the old was pretty well completely rotted away.

Got some pretty great deals in the last few days of material shopping.  110 sq ft of really nice ceramic tile, being sold as a remnant, for just about $.75/sq ft.  Bathroom tub, $100.  4 new ceiling fans from the Habitat store for $20 each - two nice Casablanca fans and two heavy duty Hunters.  Sometimes its hard to balance what you'd like in your own home vs. what is important here.  But the other side of this coin is that if you wind up with a bargain basement look, you have defeated your purpose.  Having an idea in your head of your end-state is important.  Being able to massage that along the way in real-time takes some practice.
